Conquering Snowdon

In September 2000 the Tramper, class 3 mobility scooter climbed to the summit of Snowdon, or Yr Wyddfa.

One of our very first Tramper owners was a paraplegic Howard Brunton. He was an experienced mountaineer before having a climbing accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down and permanently in a wheelchair. He was so enamored with his Tramper he approached us at Beamer and said a little tongue in cheek I think the Tramper would get to the top of Snowdon and so the challenge was founded.

We started with a basic look of the paths and thought that the Llanberis Pass would be the best track to use, as if all else failed we could use the train to get Howard off the mountain safely. Howard had not climbed since his accident and he did not know if paralyzed limbs would cope with the arduous journey the cold and the wind.

The Tramper was a standard machine, fitted with lower gearing and an axial flux motor to cope with the climb. Behind the Tramper we towed a very light weight trailer carrying a spare set of batteries and ramps.

A team was assembled with experienced mountaineers and a team from Beamer. The Tramper climbed to the top of Snowdon entirely under its own power. The entire trip was recorded by GPS tracking and filmed and at the top Howard was so elated he was several clouds above the mountain.
