The History of the Tramper Mobility Scooter
We originally built a four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-steer wheelchair base as a Tetraplegic friend was having problems with his machine. Later we had a phone call from Dr Mike Bruton who was to become the Chairman of The Disabled Ramblers organisation. He had written an article, which appeared in Magic Carpet, the disabled drivers’ magazine, looking for a device that disabled users could use to travel further afield.
We rang and spoke to him about the four-wheel-drive wheelchair base, following which Robin Helby, Dr Mike Bruton and Dr Roger Fitzwater visited us. They brought several scooters, and declared that the wheelchair base would do so much more than any of the scooters they had brought.
Currently they had to use different scooters for different purposes. They explained that they liked different features on different machines which frustrated them, so we attempted to adapt two of their scooters. This was just a half way house. we then suggested that if we produced five new machines, we could design a much better scooter.
Following a few prototypes, we had something they could judge which they found highly acceptable so we built the first prototype Trampers. When other people saw them, they began to enquire where they could get one. Initially we approached other companies to take on full production, but to no avail.
We then decided to have a go ourselves and on 15th of October 1998 we founded Beamer Limited and then the first Trampers were produced. An opportunity occurred to appear on the original BBC Countryfile show which was a farming programme shown on Sunday mornings. That really gave us a kickstart with the phones ringing off the hook.
Since then, we have introduced a three-wheeler and hand-built over 2500 machines, all the while adding improvements and developing aspects of the Tramper to make it more comfortable for the user.
